Moving to Japan is exciting, but garbage day can feel confusing at first. Different bags, different days, different rules for every city — it is a lot to remember. Don't worry, we'll make it simple. This guide uses plain English and emoji so you can sort your garbage correctly from day one.

Why Japan Has 4-7 Garbage Categories

Japan sorts garbage into more categories than many other countries — usually between 4 and 7, depending on the city. This is not random. It comes from national recycling policy: Japan has very limited landfill space, so recycling as much as possible is a priority. Sorting garbage correctly helps turn cans, bottles, and paper back into new products instead of burying them.

Each city (called a jichitai, or local municipality) sets its own detailed rules on top of this national policy. That is why the categories can look different when you move from one city to another.

Basic Categories with Emoji

Here is the simplest way to remember the main categories. Use this chart as your quick reference.

EmojiCategory (English)日本語What goes here
Food waste, paper waste (dirty/small), diapers, small wood items
Clean paper, magazines, clean plastic with the プラ mark
Aluminum cans, steel cans, glass bottles (rinsed)
Paper紙類Newspapers, cardboard, paper packs (folded, tied with string)
Batteries, fluorescent tubes, thermometers, lighters
Ceramics, small metal items, broken glass (wrapped)
Furniture, large appliances, bicycles (needs a paid sticker)

Most cities collect burnable garbage 2 times a week, recyclables and cans/bottles once a week, and bulky waste only by advance reservation.

Plastic — The Most Confusing Part

Plastic is where almost every foreign resident gets confused, so let's slow down here.

In Japan, plastic packaging with the プラ (pura) mark — a small triangle symbol printed on the package — usually goes into recyclable plastic, not burnable garbage. This includes things like snack wrappers, plastic trays, and shampoo bottle caps. However, plastic products (like a plastic toy, a bucket, or a hanger) are often treated as burnable or non-burnable garbage depending on the city, because they are not "packaging."

The other confusing point is dirty plastic. If a plastic container is heavily soiled with food (for example, a curry container that won't rinse clean), most cities ask you to put it in burnable garbage instead of recyclable plastic, because contamination can ruin an entire batch of recycling.

Simple rule of thumb

Look for the プラ mark, rinse it if it's a food container, and when in doubt, check your city's official sorting guide rather than guessing.

Bag Color & Designated Bags by City

Some cities require you to buy special "designated bags" (指定袋) sold at supermarkets and convenience stores. Others allow any transparent or semi-transparent bag. Here is a quick comparison of 5 major cities as of June 2026.

CityDesignated Bag RequiredBag Color / Type
YokohamaNoAny bag; transparent or semi-transparent recommended
Setagaya (Tokyo)NoAny bag; transparent or semi-transparent recommended
OsakaNoTransparent or semi-transparent recommended
NagoyaYesDesignated bags, color depends on garbage category
Tokorozawa (Saitama)NoTransparent or semi-transparent recommended

Important

Nagoya is the exception among these 5 cities — you must buy official designated bags sold at local stores. In the other 4 cities, you can use your own bags, but they should be transparent or semi-transparent so collection staff can check the contents. Black or opaque bags are often rejected.

Collection Day — How to Find Yours

Your garbage collection day depends on your exact address, not just your city. Here is how to find it:

  1. Check your city's official website — most large cities now have an English-language page, though smaller towns may not.
  2. Look for a printed calendar — when you register your address at the ward office (区役所/市役所), you are often given a paper garbage calendar.
  3. Ask your landlord or real estate agent — they usually know the local rules and can point you to the right resource.
  4. Use Gomi-Q — this site helps you search your area's collection days and sorting rules in one place.

Sodai-gomi (Bulky Waste) — What to Do

Large items like furniture, mattresses, and bicycles cannot be put out with regular garbage. They require a special process called sodai-gomi

  1. Apply online or by phone to your city's sodai-gomi reception center, and tell them the item and its size.
  2. Buy a sticker (処理券) at a nearby convenience store or supermarket — the price depends on the item.
  3. Attach the sticker and put the item out on your scheduled collection day, usually in front of your building before 8am.

This process usually takes 1-2 weeks from application to collection, so plan ahead if you are moving out.

Common Mistakes Foreign Residents Make

Here are the 10 most common mistakes — learning these now will save you a lot of confusion later.

  1. Throwing plastic packaging into burnable garbage — Look for the プラ mark first.
  2. Not rinsing containers — Dirty cans, bottles, and plastic trays can be rejected.
  3. Missing the collection time — Most areas require garbage out by 8:00-8:30am, not the night before.
  4. Putting garbage out on the wrong day — Each category has its own fixed day of the week.
  5. Not folding or tying cardboard — Loose cardboard boxes are often refused; tie them with string.
  6. Batteries in burnable garbage — This is a real fire risk in collection trucks; batteries need separate hazardous disposal.
  7. Using an opaque or black bag — Many cities reject bags where contents can't be seen.
  8. Putting out sodai-gomi without a sticker — Furniture and appliances left without the paid sticker will not be collected.
  9. Assuming all cities have the same rules — Moving to a new city means checking the rules again from scratch.
  10. Ignoring size limits — Some "non-burnable" categories have size limits before an item becomes sodai-gomi.

FAQ

Q. What if I put out garbage on the wrong day?

A. It won't be collected. You'll need to take it back home and wait for the next scheduled collection day for that category.(間違った曜日に出したらどうなる?

Q. Can I use any plastic bag, or do I need a special one?

A. It depends on the city. Most of the 5 cities in this guide allow any transparent bag, but Nagoya requires official designated bags sold at local stores.(どんな袋でもいい?

Q. What should I do with a broken smartphone or old electronics?

A. Small electronics often have a dedicated collection box at electronics stores or city offices. Larger appliances (TV, fridge, washing machine, air conditioner) fall under a separate recycling law and require a fee.(壊れたスマホや古い電化製品はどうする?

Q. Do I need to speak Japanese to sort garbage correctly?

A. Not necessarily. Many city websites now have English pages, and this guide's emoji chart is designed so you can sort garbage without reading Japanese at all.(日本語ができないと分別できない?

Q. What happens if I sort garbage incorrectly by mistake?

A. In most cases, the collection staff will leave a warning sticker (違反シール) on the bag and not collect it. Repeated mistakes may prompt a visit from the local ward office, but this is educational, not punitive, for first-time residents.(間違えて分別したらどうなる?

Q. Where can I get a garbage calendar in English?

A. Ask at your ward/city office when you register your address, or check your city's official website — many now publish English or multilingual PDF calendars.(英語のゴミカレンダーはどこで手に入る?
